mean的用法和使用技巧
mean既可以用作动词，也可以用作形容词，means还可以作名词，含义非常多，经常会用作完形填空的选项，是非常重要的高考考点。
1、mean用作动词（meant，meant）
①意思是（一般无进行时）
If you nod your head you usually mean yes. 如果你点头，你的意思通常是“是”。（外研版第4册）
I really don\'t know what you mean. 我真的不明白你的意思。
②意味着（一般无进行时）
mean doing sth意味着做某事
Missing the train means waiting for another 2 hours. 误了火车意味着还要等两个小时。

③意欲，打算
--What do you mean by doing so? 你这样做是什么意思?

2、mean用作形容词
①吝啬的，小气的
He is the meanest person I know, so you can get nothing from him. 他是我认识的最小气的人，所以你从他那里得不到任何东西。
②卑鄙的，刻薄的，不善良的
Don\'t be so mean to your little brother! 别对你弟弟那么刻薄!
③平庸的，一般的
Although he has the meanest intelligence, he perhaps is the kindest person in the world. 虽然他的智商平庸，但他也许是世界上最善良的人。
④低劣而肮脏的
She was shabby in dress and lived in a mean house. 她衣衫褴褛，住在一所脏乱的房子里。

重点提示：
含义和用法相似的短语有：in/under no circumstances, in no way, in no sense, on no account（决不）等
当这些具有否定意义的短语位于句首时，句子部分倒装。
By no means is he satisfied with his achievement. 他对自己的成就一点也不满意。
On no account can we go out in the big rain. 我们无论如何也不能冒着大雨出去。
mean的用法和使用技巧
mean可以用作动词、名词、形容词，非常灵活，其用法和使用技巧如下：
用作动词：mean用作动词时，后面可以接名词、代词、动名词、动词不定式或者that/wh-从句作宾语，有时还可以接双宾语。
例1：What do you mean by “Hello”?
例2：He means to help us.
例3：I didn\'t mean to hurt you.
用作形容词：mean用作形容词时的意思是“吝啬的；自私的”，可用来修饰人或具体的事物，也可以修饰抽象的事物。同时也可表示“平均的；平均数”，这时指将两个或两个以上不同的数字相加，然后用相加后的总和再除以相加的数字的个数所得到的数。
例4：He played a mean game of chess yesterday.昨天他下了一盘十分出色的棋。
例5：Her husband is very mean about money.她的丈夫在金钱上很吝啬。
例6：What is the mean temperature in that locality?那个地方的平均气温是多少？
用作名词：mean用作名词时的意思是“中间；中庸”，指某事处于中间状态。作为“中间”解时，通常后接介词between表示“在…两者之间的折中办法”。
例7：We didn\'t mean you to go out alone.我们不想让你一个人出去。
例8：I didn\'t mean him to come so early.我没有要他来得这么早。
